ceremony

Oh man. I just spent like 20 minutes wrapping gifts for my friends’ kids. But I figure I’m giving Lucy what could be the entry point to a career, I figure it demands ceremony.

I wrapped a sketchbook. Then I put “The Explorer’s Guide To Drawing Mythical Creatures” on top of that, and wrapped that pile. Put “Dragonart” on top of that, and wrapped it. Finally, Hultgren’s book on drawing animals went on top of THAT, and I wrapped it all. No bows; each was just wrapped in two layers of similarly-but differently colored pieces of tissue paper. With, if course, a color gradient going on from one package to the next. I taped down the end flaps on the bottom of the packages; the front invites opening, by having a loose edge of the paper visible, with the second color poking out a little to create a decorative accent AND to draw your attention to where to rip.

I mean, I could have just bunged then all into one of the gift bags my mom has around and wadded up the tissue paper over it – but this way I create a bit of a narrative of increasing coolness with the books, that culminates with a blank sketchbook.

There’s also some markers and pens, hidden in the same gift bag, wrapped in the same purple tissue I have wads of protecting this delicate, crazy wrapping job.

I did the same with the two graphic novels I’m giving Clay – first he’ll find “King City”, then “RASL”, figuring “the new book by the dude who did that Bone thing I enjoyed” is cooler than this weird thing by a guy he hasn’t heard of – but really that’s just so he gets to share in the fun.

relics of my childhood: christmas edition

This gallery contains 6 photos.

My mom wanted to go through a chest full of old Christmas stuff, save a few things, and toss the rest. Here are some things I made that I had no problem tossing… And now I have a bit of a headache from inhaling all the dust we kicked up while digging through this stuff. […]

game reviews for my mom?

DEAR INTERNET: Does anyone know any review sites that focus on The Kinds Of Games My Mother Likes on the iPad? “Casual” games, solitaire, gem matching, hidden object, that kind of stuff. I gave her a gift card along with my old iPad, and realized I really have no idea what to suggest grabbing.

An iPad game review site with a decent amount of Mom Games reviews would be fine too. (jayisgames.com comes to mind now that I think about it – any other suggestions?)

Plus if your mom has some app she loves, let me know.

(This is assuming your mom is kinda like mine: in her sixties, not a total technophobe but also not into tech for its own sake.)

dragging the parent into the future

So this morning I got up and gave my mom her Chrisbirthmas gift: a hand-me-down iPad.

More importantly, I’m hanging out on the couch with her helping to get it set up and teaching her how to use it! Right now she’s sitting next to me arranging her apps. In the long run… I’m kind of hoping that next time I’m in town, she’ll have barely touched her aging, sluggish laptop for anything but a few tasks. I don’t think she really needs more than the iPad can do, to be honest.

Raccoon tail: acquired.
Face paint: already hanging around the house.
Lab coat: acquired, modified to fit me better and have a slit up the back for the tail to poke out of.

Ears would be a nice touch but yeah, I think I’m as ready as I need to be for Dr. Procyon to make an appearance onstage at the COG’s twentieth anniversary show this week.

And speaking of the COG – WHY ARE NONE OF YOU BACKING PINKERTON’S KICKSTARTER.

witchmas time is here

I spent a few hours last night and like six hours today getting this together. Totally worth it.

Sometime later I’d like to add a few of my own color patterns, but this is good for now. I’d like to have a mode that comes closer to simulating “christmas tree lights” – lone sparkles in a mostly-dark strip. I have ideas of how to make it happen.

It’d also be nice to have two more buttons so I can turn random mode off; I don’t have any more buttons in my electronics box right now. So I deal.

Code from here. It worked like a charm once I went deep inside the code and told it which pins to use for input and output. But getting to that point took an annoying amount of time, as usual.

(If you want to make one of your own, you may also want to go into LEDStripG35String.cpp and change line 10 to LEDStrip8806 strip = LEDStrip8806(numPixels,[your data line],[your clock line]);, and change the pin list in the definition of ‘buttons’ in LEDStripXmas.ino to match your wiring.)

the long-term projects rear their heads from underground now and then

Last night, I finished reading “Worm“. Some stuff in the epilogues really struck me as Not Working. I pondered it in the back of my head while I finished up some stuff for the Rainfurrest website, then went to bed.

And those ponderings moved over to consider my plans for “Drowning City”. I asked myself if the ending would be unsatisfying in the same way Worm's was. Yes, it would be, I realized. So I thought about what I felt was missing, and wrote out some descriptions of stuff to fill this narrative hole between the climax and epilogue – something about how Alecto goes from falling out of a disintegrating fairy castle, into the bleak reality of post-Katrina New Orleans.

Looking at it in the light of day, it still feels good. So yay. One more hole in the plot plugged.

Man. I've been carrying this story around for so long now. It's going to feel really, really weird when I'm at the point of having finally told it in a few years. I'll probably never turn a story over again for as long as I have this one.

But right now I should focus on more immediate projects again – that aforementioned web site, getting Rita 2 out the door, and those short pieces I've promised.

Black Friday anti-sale: jack all my online store's prices up to $100, no books will be sent, I'll donate half the money to Adbusters and use the other half to buy Bitcoin that I plan to just sit on for several years because fuck you I'm a dragon.

Not actually implemented, just an idea that passed through my head while I was trying to go back to sleep.

dream fragments

Dreams of closing doors left open, business-like canine escorts, and not thinking it's right to consider killing a wildcat merely because she's insufficiently beautiful. I was sleeping diagonally on the bed, with my head on the side usually left empty; I can't help but feel like ths is related to my dreams feeling like they were for someone else.

Also I think there was something about lifting up sheets and slipping under them at the end of the dream? I wonder where I went that I had to come back from like that.

I woke up, had to pee. Looked down while dealing with that and realized I had the first spontaneous erection in I don't know how long. It vanished quickly; I'm not sure if it came from dreaming or from needing to pee. I really don't even get piss hard-ons any more. Estrogen is a hell of a drug. Or maybe spiro, I dunno.

I'd gone to bed around nine last night, after my weird inverted Thanksgiving. It's 1:11 now. I'm still tired. Picked up my little guardian T Rex from where she'd been sitting on the bureau; time for Zoya to keep the rest of tonight's dreams safe.
