Is Octagaons a nod to Neuromancer by any chance?
Not intentionally but it could be cryptomnesia! The drug implications there are only intended to refer to rumors that a certain popular incarnation of Doctor Who was doped to the gills on cocaine for much of his run.
I had the same thought re ‘octagons’ in _Neuromancer,_ but I confess that Gibson was already in my head as I was reading along here, thanks to the Idoru/”Sandbenders” nod earlier on.
It always makes me so happy when people pick up weird little references like that. <3
